This isn’t another Dry January blog post. In fact, I’ve never participated in Dry January. I have, however, dabbled in sobriety just for the hell of it —mostly because I’ve reached an age where a hangover can last more than a day. With all the recent research highlighting the alarming effects of alcohol, it’s something to think about. This is one of the latest (scary) advisories.
The longest I’ve gone without drinking alcohol is six months. When I tell you that I’ve never felt better, I’m not joking. What kept me going back to drinking was FOMO. I wanted to be part of the drinking and socializing with my friend group. Thankfully, more and more places are offering exciting mocktails and non-alcoholic drinks, so you can still enjoy a night out even if you’re cutting back.
PSA: Athletic Brewing Co makes delicious non-alcoholic beer. They’re my favorite.
Here’s what you might experience when you ditch the booze:
Improved sleep
Alcohol disrupts your sleep cycle, preventing you from reaching the deep, restorative sleep stages. There’s no better feeling than waking up feeling rested and ready to take on the day — especially when you reach your 30s. Remember those days when you could pull an all-nighter and still function? Yeah, me neither.
Better relationships
Yes, a drink and yap could be fun, but sobriety can help you connect with the people around you on a whole new level. You’ll be more engaged in conversations, listen more attentively, and actually remember what people say. Instead of getting caught up in the loud, hazy blur of a boozy night out, I can focus on the people I’m with. We’re about quality over quantity over here.
Sharper mind
Ever noticed how your mind feels sharper and more focused when you haven’t been drinking? That’s because alcohol can affect your cognitive function, memory, and attention span. By taking a break from booze, you might find it easier to concentrate, solve problems, and tap into your creativity. As a creative, I experience less writing and creativity block when I’m not drinking. It’s also easier for me to get into flow state.
More money
Cocktails are extremely overpriced these days. During my six months of sobriety, I saved at least $500, maybe more. That’s a flight to Italy! Think of all the money you spend on drinks. Now imagine redirecting that cash flow towards something you really want – a vacation, a new wardrobe, or maybe just a little extra padding in your savings account.
Better health
Alcohol can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to illness. It’s also loaded with empty calories that can contribute to weight gain and other health problems. When I took a break from drinking, I didn’t track my weight, but I did notice my clothes fitting better. Alcohol can have a significant impact on your mental well-being, too. While it might seem like a quick fix for stress or anxiety, it can actually worsen those feelings over time.
If you’re curious about sobriety, even if it’s just for a couple of weeks, I say go for it! No need to feel the pressure of Dry January — just do it on your own terms. You might be surprised at what you discover about yourself.
